Have you noticed nibbled leaf edges, or noticed that your plants are suddenly looking droopy and weak? There is a good chance that the vine weevil or its hungry larvae are at work! The larvae cause serious damage by eating the roots underground, which can eventually cause your plants to die. Fortunately, my little helpers are ready to solve this problem in a natural and effective way.

How do you know if you have a vine weevil problem?

Keep an eye out for the telltale signs in your garden. The adult weevils leave distinct, semi-circular notches in the edges of the leaves. If you notice your plants suddenly wilting, turning yellow, or coming loose from the soil very easily, it means the larvae are feeding on the roots underground. Finding these cream-colored larvae with a brown head in the soil is a clear sign that it is time to take action.

Meet my underground helpers

That is why I want to introduce you to my tiny helpers: nematodes! These microscopic roundworms are the natural enemies of the vine weevil larvae. You cannot see them, but what they do is pure magic. They actively hunt for the larvae in the soil and penetrate them. Once inside, they release a natural bacterium, which causes the larvae to die. No chemical nonsense, just nature doing its job!

What you need to know

My little helpers are quite flexible and work best at a soil temperature between 8°C and 28°C. Ideally, you should use them right after receiving them, as that's when they're at their strongest. Just make sure not to use them during extreme heat – they will not survive well above 30°C.

A quick note on storage

Since my little helpers are living creatures, they need a bit of extra care. Do you need to wait a little while? No problem at all. Just keep them in the refrigerator between 3 and 5°C. They will remain effective for up to 7 days.

This is how you use Nematodes for Vine Weevil

  1. Start with moist soil so your plants can properly absorb the water with nematodes.
  2. Apply the nematodes in the morning or evening, as they do not tolerate UV light well.
  3. Take the nematodes out of the refrigerator 30 minutes before use so they can reach room temperature.
  4. Mix the nematodes with water in a bucket or watering can and stir well. Let the mixture rest for 15 minutes before use.
  5. Dilute the mixture in portions with additional water, about 10 liters per 10 m². The dilution does not have to be exact, as long as you can distribute the nematodes evenly over the surface.
  6. Keep the soil nicely moist for two weeks. Not soaking wet, just as your plants prefer.
  7. Repeat the treatment after 2 to 3 weeks to tackle any remaining pests.
